Foreign Body Removal Online Course
When a patient has something stuck in their ear, do you remove it or refer them?
This course is for practitioners who are already trained in microsuction. It starts with the anatomy of the ear canal and works through to the decision itself, including when someone should go to A&E instead and what to write up afterwards.
Written and taught by the people who still work in our Rugeley clinic every week: Lesley Waterfield, Director of Education and Development; Paul White, Logistics Director; and Debbie Darling, Clinical Director, who runs our clinics.

Your insurance
Already microsuction trained? Add foreign body removal to your cover.
Insurers won't cover you for a procedure you can't show training in. If you're already microsuction trained, this certificate is what they ask for before adding foreign body removal to your cover. It sits on top of your microsuction training, so you still need that first. Once it's on your cover, you can see these patients yourself instead of sending them elsewhere.
- Pass the assessment and we issue a certificate in your name. It's valid for three years.
- Your insurer can add foreign body removal to the microsuction cover you already have.
- Once you've passed, we can put you in touch with our insurance partners.
- Your own scope of practice still applies, and the course is clear about when to refer.
Who it's for
You already do microsuction. Now and then you find something that isn't wax.
For practitioners already trained in microsuction. If you're not trained yet, start with our Professional Microsuction Course.
You don't need to have removed one before. The course gives you time to think it through before you face it in clinic.
Adults over 18 only. The course doesn't cover children, and it tells you plainly when someone should go to A&E instead.
Objects the course works through
- Beads
- Cotton wool
- Hearing aid components
- Button batteries
- Insects
What the object is changes what you do, so we go through each type in turn, including the ones that can't wait. For each one we compare manual instruments, warm water irrigation and microsuction. The course finishes with five case studies.

Who is this course for?
For practitioners already trained in microsuction. If you're not trained yet, start with our Professional Microsuction Course.
Does it cover children?
No, it's for adults over 18 only. The course doesn't cover children, and it tells you when someone should go to A&E instead.
Will this let me remove foreign bodies from patients' ears?
Already microsuction trained? This certificate is what your insurer asks for to add foreign body removal to your cover. It's an add-on to your microsuction training, so it won't make you insurable on its own. Once you've passed, we can put you in touch with our insurance partners. Your own scope of practice still applies, and the course is clear about where that ends and when to refer.
Is this the same as your two-day training course?
No. The Professional Microsuction Course is our core training: two days of hands-on, supervised practice, with a Certificate of Safe Practice at the end. This online course is an add-on for people who've already done microsuction training and want foreign body removal on their insurance.
How does the assessment work?
15 multiple choice questions, with 30 minutes for each attempt. You need 80% to pass and you can have up to 5 attempts. Afterwards we show you your score and whether you've passed, but not the individual answers.
What do I get at the end?
A Certificate of Attainment in your name, once you've passed the assessment and filled in the course feedback. It's valid for 3 years from the day you finish, and it can't be transferred to anyone else.
How long do I have to complete it?
As long as you need. Lessons open in order, and you can stop and come back whenever you like.
Is there a student discount?
Not while the limited-time offer is on. The offer already brings it down from £395 to £295 incl. VAT, which is the student price, so there's no code to enter.
